Marienplatz

Munich
This is a great starting point for your exploration of Munich. Marienplatz (St. Mary’s Square) is in the heart of this wonderful city. Back in the Middle Ages this square was used as the main market place and also where many main festivities took place.

Marienplatz lies in front of city hall “Rathaus” and is full of historical and medieval architecture to say the least. Fraunenkirche with its twin towers would be one of the best known symbols of Munich. You also have the Asamkirche if you are interested in art and religion just 200m from Fraunenkirche.

Tourists just flock to Marienplatz to view the fantastic gothic look of the town hall. The bells in the town hall tower ring out at 11am, 12 noon and 5pm in the summer, followed by the chime of the “Glockenspiel” (life-sized statues rotate around each other in a mock dance!)

Right in the centre of Marienplatz there is the Marien’s column (Mariensaule). The Marienplatz is the ideal place to relax and people watch while sipping a Bavarian beer.
