City Gates

Munich
Originally five city gates stood in Munich, but sadly only three remain today: the Karlstor, Isartor and Sendlinger Tor.

The Karlstor (Karl’s gate) is the main gate to the pedestrian zone in Munich, Neuhauserstrase connects Karlstor with Marienplatz , this street is the most popular stree in Munich.

Isartor (Isar Gate) stands west of Marienplatz at the end of the “Tal” (valley). This town gate is a symbol of the history and strength of Munich and is now one of the city’s most popular sightseeing spots. The front wall of the Isartor is decorated with a painting depicting the Battle fought by Ludwig der Bayer in 1322 at Ampting, the Isartor is a must see while visiting Munich.

Sendlinger Tor is the oldest of the three gates. Dating back to 1318, this famous gate led the trade route to Italy. The gate was a part of the outer city wall. The main tower was destroyed in the early 19th century, two hexagonal side towers and the walls were restored in 1860, then in 1906 the three original arches were replaced by one large arch.

Many city walks begin at Sendlinger Tor leading visitors through the old town to the lively public markets.
