Altes Rathaus

Munich
The Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) is located close to Marienplatz. It was reconstructed into a Bavarian Gothic style building following damage during World War II. You’ll find the Altes Rathaus sitting between the “Beck am Rathausbeck” and the “Talbrucktor” gate.

Jorg V. Halsbach also known as “Ganghofer”, the master builder of the Cathedral “Frauenkirche”, originally built the hall between 1470 and 1480. Altes Rathaus was originally a dance hall but nowadays you’ll find the hall is used as the toy museum (Spielzeugmuseum).

The adjoining tower to the hall was originally constructed in Marineplatz in 1180 and was used as a watchtower to defend the eastern side of the city.

You may find the exterior of the building can look quite plain in comparison with surrounding buildings, however the interior has been spoken of as a masterpiece of medieval design.

Inside you’ll find a beautiful barrel vaulted timber roof with amazing decorative beams and golden stars. The Altes Rathaus holds artist Erasmus Grasser’s renowned Morris dancer figures. A Frieze of the town’s coat of arms was installed in 1478.
