This remarkable piece of architecture serves as a symbol for peace in the city of Munich.
The Siegestor Victory Gate was designed by Friedrich von Gartner and constructed between 1843 and 1852. Situated at the end of Lugwigstrasse, the gate consists of a three-arched triumphal arch (one large one with two smaller ones at either side) crowned with a statue of Bavaria.
The winged statues incorporated throughout Siegestor Victory Gate are symbols of victory. During World War II, like so many monuments, statues and building throughout Germany, Siegestor was also damaged, it was partially rebuilt in the 1950's and just recently all its statues were restored.
The most important aspect, and one of the main reason this Gate is famous today is for the inscription which was added to the structure after the war is the quote by Wilhelm Hausenstein, reads “Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstort, zum Frieden mahnend”, translated means “Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace”.
